Inside Out Family/Youth Camping Program
The Foundation funds the Inside Out Family/Youth Camping Program, whose mission is to encourage people from all cultures to enjoy state parks.
People of color are typically underrepresented among parks users due to cultural barriers and accessibility issues. Inside Out provides opportunities for participants to enjoy tent camping, overnight stays in yurts, cabins and vacation houses; and a variety of activities such as boating, hiking, swimming, rock climbing and skiing. Transportation, equipment, meals and overnight fees are provided at no cost to participants.
The Foundation also provides funding for the Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks program, which highlights Washington’s rich cultural heritage through performances and other events in state parks.
The initiative aims to strengthen the cultural identities of the state’s diverse communities and foster cross-cultural respect and appreciation while promoting state parks and venues for cultural and community events. Events held under the program have included Native American storytelling, an African American family reunion day, Cinco de Mayo fiestas, a Russian and Ukrainian festival and a hip hop picnic.
